Al-Qasas 28:57

“And they [i.e., the Quraysh] say, "If we were to follow the guidance with you, we would be swept[1113] from our land." Have We not established for them a safe sanctuary to which are brought the fruits of all things as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.”

Essence

Afraid that faith would cost them their land, they forgot who had kept that land safe and fed while they ignored Him.

A reflection

Safe all along, and never asking why

The objection in this ayah sounds practical. If we follow the guidance with you, we will be snatched from our land. Allah does not answer with an argument about doctrine. He answers with a question about their own address.

A-wa-lam numakkin lahum ḥaraman āminan: have We not established for them a secure sanctuary?

The commentaries fill in the picture. Before Islam, the tribes of Arabia raided and killed one another. The people of Makkah moved among them untouched, protected by the sanctity of the House. One commentary notes it was well known that even gazelles were safe there from wolves, and pigeons from kites.

Then comes the sting, put plainly by one early interpreter. You were safe in My sanctuary, eating My provision, and worshipping others besides Me. Will you now be afraid, if you worship Me and believe in Me?

That question shrinks a particular kind of pride. Quraysh credited their safety to their own standing, their trade and their alliances. They imagined they had made themselves secure. The ayah says the security was a gift, and the gift had a Giver.

A man in late middle age feels calm about the future. He credits a good pension, a paid-off house and a quiet postcode. He has never once thanked anyone for the calm itself. Asked to do something right but costly, his first worry would be the pension.

We do the same. We name our arrangements as the source of our safety, then fear that obeying Allah will break them. The ayah reverses it. The One who kept you safe while you ignored Him will not abandon you when you turn to Him.

Is it boastful for Allah to remind people of His favours? The reminder adds nothing to Him. He gives it to dissolve a fear that was standing between them and the truth.
