Ash-Shuraa 42:52

“And thus We have revealed to you an inspiration of Our command [i.e., the Qur’ān]. You did not know what is the Book or [what is] faith, but We have made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants. And indeed, [O Muḥammad], you guide to a straight path -”

Essence

The Quran is breath for dead hearts and light for dark ones, leading to the straight path we ask for in every prayer.

A reflection

What no hunter can stalk

A celebrated code-breaker retires after forty years. She has cracked ciphers no one else could. At her farewell dinner she says something unexpected. The one thing I never worked out, she says, was what any of it was for.

The ayah says to the Prophet ﷺ himself: mā kunta tadrī mā al-kitābu wa-lā al-īmān. You did not know what the Book was, nor faith. The verb tadrī comes from a root with a vivid image. A hunter crept behind a camel towards the game, using it as a screen. Dirāya is knowledge reached by skill and stealthy approach, working out where the game was before you could see it.

Some knowledge can be stalked like that. Some cannot. The ayah says that what came to the Prophet ﷺ could not have been reached by any human cleverness. It had to be given: awḥaynā ilayka, We revealed to you.

This is where intellectual pride meets its limit. Human minds can decode, calculate and discover a great deal. What we are for, and how to reach our Lord, do not yield to cleverness alone. Even the best of humanity received them as a gift.

A sceptic might hear the majestic We as divine self-congratulation. The ayah uses it to describe giving: We revealed, We made it a light, We guide. The grandeur serves generosity.

The code-breaker's honesty was the beginning of humility. She had mastered every puzzle but the one that mattered. The ayah offers the answer that no hunter could have stalked. It was told, sent down, revealed. The humble response is simply to receive it.
