Al-Qasas 28:74

وَيَوْمَ يُنَادِيهِمْ فَيَقُولُ أَيْنَ شُرَكَآءِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ كُنتُمْ تَزْعُمُونَ

“And [warn of] the Day He will call them and say, "Where are My 'partners' which you used to claim?"”

Saheeh International

Essence

The question about partners returns word for word; asked a second time, it meets not bewilderment but silence.

A reflection

The second time, nobody answers

This ayah repeats 28:62 word for word, and the fuller treatment of the question sits there. Here it does a different job.

One classical commentator explains the repeat by two moments on that Day. At the first call, they turn to the partners they worshipped, and nothing answers. Their bewilderment shows. At the second call, they say nothing at all.

The ego loves the last word. Whole lives are spent rehearsing replies and winning arguments. This ayah pictures the place where every argument ends. One voice asks, and the room stays silent.

Allah does not ask because He needs them to concede. He already knows the answer. The question exposes the claim for the claimants themselves, so that no one leaves thinking they were judged without a hearing. The next ayah opens that hearing: a witness from every nation, and a demand for proof.
