Al-Qasas · Makki · ayah 75 of 88
Al-Qasas 28:75
“And We will extract from every nation a witness and say, "Produce your proof," and they will know that the truth belongs to Allāh, and lost from them is that which they used to invent.”
Saheeh International
Essence
On that Day a witness is drawn from every nation, proof is demanded, and every invented support dissolves like milk lost in water.
A reflection
The Judge who still asks for evidence
At a planning inquiry, a developer has quoted a traffic survey all afternoon. It proves, he says, that the new estate will add almost nothing to the roads. The inspector asks politely to see it. There is a pause. His team shuffles papers. There is no survey.
That pause is a small picture of this ayah. A witness is brought from every nation. Then comes the instruction: bring your proof. Proof, that is, for everything you worshipped beside Allah.
Notice who is asking. The One who knows every secret, who needs no file and no testimony, still holds a hearing. A classical commentator notes the switch to the royal We: We drew out, We said. It underlines the weight of the moment. Yet the majesty here takes the form of procedure. Witness first, then the defendant's chance to produce evidence, then the verdict.
Why does He bother? Not for His own sake. He already knows. One commentator explains that the prophets testify that they conveyed the message in full, so it is known the failure was not theirs. The hearing is for the accused, so that no one can say they were condemned unheard.
The ego assumes its convictions need no evidence. They feel true, so they must be. This ayah pictures the day that assumption is tested. Then they knew that the truth belongs to Allah. The knowing comes. It simply comes after the hearing has closed.
The same demand appears in this life, at 27:64 and elsewhere, while there is still time to answer it. The question will not change. Only the timing will.
