Al-Qasas 28:62
وَيَوْمَ يُنَادِيهِمْ فَيَقُولُ أَيْنَ شُرَكَآءِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ كُنتُمْ تَزْعُمُونَ
“And [warn of] the Day He will call them and say, "Where are My 'partners' which you used to claim?"”
Saheeh International
Essence
On the Day He calls them, He asks one question that has no answer: where are the partners you used to claim?
A reflection
A question with no address
A delivery driver stands on a quiet street holding a parcel. The label says number 47. The houses run 41, 43, 45, then a hedge, then the end of the road. He walks it twice and checks the map again. There is no 47. There never was. Someone typed an address that does not exist.
The question in this ayah begins with ayna: where? It is a question about place. Allah does not ask, 'Were they real?' or 'Why did you believe in them?' He asks where they are. And there is nowhere to point. On that Day, everything people leaned on besides Him has no ground to stand on. A false partner was never an address. It was only a label on a parcel.
This is majesty in its plainest form. People have always tried to spread their trust across many helpers. A patron, a saint, a charm, a powerful cousin, a portfolio. Part of the appeal is control. A helper you chose feels manageable. One Lord who cannot be managed is harder on the ego. The partners were a way of keeping some of the arrangements in our own hands.
The Day takes that away with one word. The question needs no shouting and no argument. It only needs an answer, and none comes.
Is this a jealous ruler insisting on loyalty? No. A hadith in Sahih Muslim gives Allah's own words: I am the One most free of need of any partner. Whoever does a deed in which he joins another with Me, I leave him to that partner. He loses nothing when people turn elsewhere. They lose everything.
The arrogance was theirs, in presuming to appoint helpers beside Him. Humility is to put our whole weight where it can actually be held.
