Al-'Ankabut 29:15
فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ وَأَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلسَّفِينَةِ وَجَعَلْنَـٰهَآ ءَايَةً لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
“But We saved him and the companions of the ship, and We made it[1128] a sign for the worlds.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah saved Nuh and the people of the ship, and made what happened a sign for all the worlds.
A reflection
Who decides what becomes a sign
A wealthy man pays for a new hospital wing on one condition: his name in brass letters over the entrance. Twenty years later the hospital is sold. On a grey Tuesday a workman unscrews the letters one by one and drops them into a bucket.
People spend fortunes trying to be remembered. We name buildings, endow prizes, and polish our profiles. Under much of it lies the ego's quiet fear of disappearing.
Now read the ayah. Fa-anjaynāhu: 'So We saved him.' Wa-jaʿalnāhā āyatan: 'and We made it a sign.' Both verbs belong to Allah. Nuh did not make his story a sign. His mockers certainly did not. The leaders of his people, who had every advantage, left no names at all. A carpenter's vessel, built by a man they laughed at, became a sign for all the worlds.
The commentators agree on how widely it was known. One says it stayed on Mount al-Judi for a long time, seen by those who passed. Another early authority says it remained until the first days of Islam. A third commentator adds that the story itself is famous among the peoples. Allah chose what would last, and it was not what the powerful would have chosen.
This shrinks the ego in a helpful way. You cannot make yourself a sign. What lasts is decided by Him, and He tends to choose obedience over prominence.
Someone may ask whether this is Allah seeking His own monument. It is not. The ayah says the sign is li-l-ʿālamīn: for the worlds. One commentator glosses it as a lesson for those who come after. A sign is a waymark set up for travellers. It is built for the people on the road, not for the One who placed it.
