Ya-Sin 36:42

وَخَلَقْنَا لَهُم مِّن مِّثْلِهِۦ مَا يَرْكَبُونَ

“And We created for them from the likes of it that which they ride.”

Essence

Every vessel since the ark, and every camel crossing a shimmering desert, is a copy made from His mould for carrying you.

A reflection

"We created" even what you built

A billboard beside a motorway advertises a new electric car. Sleek, silver, photographed on a mountain road at dawn. The slogan underneath reads: Built from nothing. It is a proud line, and the engineers behind the car worked hard for it.

This ayah uses a verb that quietly corrects the slogan. Khalaqnā lahum: We created for them. Created what? According to many early commentators, the ships that people built after Noah's ark, on its pattern. One concise commentary adds three words that change everything: by Allah's teaching. The boats were built by human hands, from skills Allah taught.

One commentator notes that some scholars preferred to read this ayah as camels instead. "Creating", they felt, means bringing something new into being, which is hard to say of things humans make. The reply recorded to that is that even human making falls under His creating. The classical schools discuss how; the shared point is plain enough.

Nothing we build is built from nothing. The steel was in the ground. The mind that designed the battery was given at birth. The laws that let a hull float and a wheel turn were in place before anyone noticed them. Our part is real, but it is always the last few steps of a very long road that began with Him.

That is where the ego shrinks. Engineering is one of the great human achievements, and rightly admired. But its proudest slogan is one word too long. Not built from nothing. Built from everything He had already created, and taught.

The humbling here is not a rebuke to effort. It is an invitation to see whose gift the effort runs on.
