Al-'Ankabut · Makki · ayah 44 of 69
Al-'Ankabut 29:44
“Allāh created the heavens and the earth in truth. Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah made the heavens and the earth in truth, firm and purposeful, so even when people reject Him, His creation keeps testifying to believers.
A reflection
A sky finished without a speech
A man spends eight months converting his loft. He has managed the builders, chosen the skylight, argued over every invoice. On the first night he lies on the new floor at midnight. Through the glass, the stars are out.
He is proud, and he has a right to be. Then a thought arrives uninvited. The thing he is looking at was never announced. No ribbon was cut. It simply is.
The ayah has that same plainness. Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth. Five Arabic words carry the whole of it. There is no description of effort, no list of materials, no applause.
Human making is noisy because human making is fragile. We announce it because it might not last and might not be noticed. Our pride hovers over our work because the work needs defending.
Allah's making needs no such guard. One commentator says bi-l-ḥaqq means not in jest or play. Another says it means with justice and fairness. A third says He alone created it, with no partner in the work.
Hold your own best achievement up against that sentence. Your degree, your business, a child well raised. Each is real and good. None of it was made from nothing, and none of it holds up the sky.
That is where the ego shrinks to its proper size. Not to nothing; you are part of what was made in truth. But small enough to stop needing an audience.
Someone may object that a God who announces His creating is Himself seeking praise. Notice whom this sentence serves. Allah is free of any need for the worlds (29:6). The announcement is for the man on the floor, who needs reminding where the stars came from.
He goes downstairs quieter than he came up. The skylight is still his. The sky is not.
