Al-'Ankabut · Makki · ayah 45 of 69

Al-'Ankabut 29:45

“Recite, [O Muḥammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allāh is greater. And Allāh knows that which you do.”

Essence

Recite and pray: prayer keeps telling you no to what is ugly, and greater still is Allah's remembrance of you, under His sight.

A reflection

The greater remembering is not yours

Most of us read the middle of this ayah as a ranking of our deeds. Remembering Allah is the greatest thing we can do. That reading is real, and commentators hold it.

But the reading the earliest generation pressed hardest runs the other way. The Companion Ibn ʿAbbās once asked a student what 'the remembrance of Allah is greater' meant. The student said: glorifying, praising and magnifying Him in prayer. Ibn ʿAbbās told him he had said something strange. Allah's remembrance of you, he said, is greater than your remembrance of Him.

The same is reported from several Companions. The great early commentator judged it the reading closest to the words.

The Prophet ﷺ conveyed it from his Lord, in both Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. If My servant remembers Me in himself, I remember him in Myself. If he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a better gathering.

Now picture a junior analyst in a large firm. For years he has mentioned the chief executive's name to friends, a little proudly. One day a director tells him: she named you at the board meeting, for the report you wrote. He goes very quiet. His mentioning her was nothing. Her mentioning him changes his week.

That is the shape of the ayah. We stand to pray thinking we are giving something. The greater event in that room is not our remembering. It is being remembered by the One who needs nothing.

That is what shrinks the ego. Our prayer is not a gift to a King who lacks it. Our pride in being regular, early, long in prostration, is pride in the smaller half of an exchange.

Someone may ask whether a God who wants to be remembered needs our attention. The ayah answers in its grammar. The comparison runs in His favour. His remembering is the greater; ours is only the doorway to it.

So the next time you say Allāhu akbar to begin a prayer, hear it this way. Greater than my standing here is His noticing that I stood.
