Al-Baqarah 2:164

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allāh has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and earth are signs for a people who use reason.”

Essence

Sky, night and day, ships, rain, creatures, winds and clouds: eight everyday wonders, each a waymark pointing to the One God for anyone who thinks.

A reflection

A roof with no pillars

A city spends years and a fortune on a sliding glass roof for its football stadium. On opening night the crowd cheers as it closes. The next winter a hailstorm cracks three panels, and the roof stays open for a season while engineers argue.

The ayah begins above that stadium: 'In the creation of the heavens and the earth'. One classical commentary names the first sign plainly. The heavens are raised with no pillars beneath and no cables above. Suppose a prophet were challenged to hold a single mountain in the air without support, it adds. That would be counted a miracle. The sky does it every day, and we call it weather.

The ayah is an answer, not a boast. When 'your god is one God' was revealed (2:163), the reports say Quraysh objected. How could one god be enough for everyone? Give us a sign. This ayah was the sign. An early commentator spells out its challenge. If your idols, together or alone, can make the like of any of this, you have an excuse. If not, you have none.

Here the ego meets its scale. We are proud of our roofs, our towers and our bridges. We have never held up a sky, or turned the earth into a home. Everything we build sits inside something we did not build.

Is it vanity for God to list His own works? Vanity needs an audience to feel bigger. Allah needs nothing (35:15). The list is for the one who asked for evidence, and for the one who forgot to look up. Each item is an āya, a word whose root pictures a waymark on a desert road: pass one, and the next appears. A translator's note adds that there are two kinds of āyāt. Some are verses on a page. These are written across the sky.
