Al-'Ankabut 29:50

“But they say, "Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "The signs are only with Allāh, and I am only a clear warner."”

Essence

Asked for signs on demand, the Prophet answers that every sign belongs to Allah; his own task is only to warn clearly.

A reflection

Not one sign in his own hand

They asked for a show. Why has no sign come down to him from his Lord? Something they could see, like the she-camel of Salih or the staff of Musa. The reply he is told to give is short, and it puts everything in its place. Innamā l-āyātu ʿinda llāh: the signs are with Allah alone.

Consider who is told to say this. The most honoured of creation, the one through whom the final Book came. If anyone could have claimed a little command over wonders, it was he. Yet he is told to say, in effect, that none of it is his. He cannot summon one sign. They are with Allah, sent when He wills and held back when He wills. One commentator stresses that no one has any share in that decision at all.

Now look at the demand from the other side. A passenger stands at an airport desk. He insists the pilot circle the city once, just for him, before he will believe planes can fly. He thinks he is being rigorous. In fact he has put himself at the centre. The sky must perform on his terms, at his hour.

That is the ego this ayah quietly shrinks. Every age has its version: if God exists, let Him do this for me, now. The demand feels bold. It is actually small. It assumes the Owner of every sign owes a performance to whoever asks loudest.

Is the refusal pride on Allah's part? Pride needs an audience, and He needs nothing from their belief. One commentator explains the withholding plainly. Had Allah known they would be guided, He would have answered, for it is easy for Him. He knew they asked in order to obstruct. Earlier peoples were given the signs they demanded, rejected them, and were destroyed (17:59). Holding back was a mercy.

The Prophet knew exactly what was his, and said so. The humblest sentence in the passage is also the truest.
