Ali 'Imran 3:118

“O you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves [i.e., believers], for they will not spare you [any] ruin. They wish you would have hardship. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater. We have certainly made clear to you the signs, if you will use reason.”

Essence

Believers: do not take as your lining those who will spare you no ruin, for their chests hide more than their mouths let out.

A reflection

He reports what is inside a chest you cannot open

Four people interview eleven candidates for one job. Afterwards they rank them, independently, and the four lists have four different names at the top. All four interviewers are experienced. All four would have told you beforehand that they read people well.

Now look at what this ayah does, because it is extraordinary and nobody notices it.

It makes a factual claim about the contents of other people's chests. What their chests conceal is greater. Not: they might be hostile. Not: be careful, you cannot know. A statement of quantity about an interior nobody has ever seen.

The word for the inner circle makes the point sharper. The lexicons say the root of biṭāna has one sense that hardly varies: the inner side of a thing, facing in. The belly is baṭn, the opposite of the back. The inside of a matter is its bāṭin, and to baṭana a matter is to know it from within. A man's biṭāna are the insiders who know his business.

The same root gives one of Allah's names: al-Bāṭin, the One who knows the inside of all things.

So the ayah is a warning about insiders, delivered by the only genuine Insider. He is not guessing at their chests. He is reporting from a place we have no access to at all.

And this is where the ego, which is quietly confident of its judgement, should feel the floor move. Every one of us runs on a private theory of who can be trusted, assembled from faces, tone, and a handful of past cases. We call it instinct and we are proud of it. The interview panel is the ordinary evidence that it is not instinct. It is guesswork with a feeling attached.

Then comes the harder half, which arrogance never reaches. If He reports the inside of their chests, He reports the inside of yours. The pride in reading people. The pleasure in being told something private. The small satisfaction of being the one who knows. All of it sits in the place He is describing.

And then the closing clause, which puts the responsibility back. We have made the signs plain to you, if you would use your minds. The information is not withheld. The reasoning is ours to do.
