Ali 'Imran 3:54
وَمَكَرُوا۟ وَمَكَرَ ٱللَّهُ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ خَيْرُ ٱلْمَـٰكِرِينَ
“And they [i.e., the disbelievers] planned, but Allāh planned. And Allāh is the best of planners.”
Saheeh International
Essence
They plotted against ʿĪsā, and Allah planned against their plot; and Allah is the best of planners.
A reflection
The plan above every plan
A company board spends a year preparing a hostile takeover. Lawyers, bankers, secret meetings, a launch date. Then a single letter arrives from the regulator, and the whole plan collapses in an afternoon. Nobody in the boardroom had even thought of it.
'They planned, and Allah planned. And Allah is the best of planners.' The commentators explain what the plotters intended. Those who rejected ʿĪsā conspired to kill him by stealth. One classical commentator records that they denounced him to the ruler of the time as a man who misled the people. Every step was laid carefully, in secret.
The lexicons picture makr as a move made in secret that turns someone from what he intended. The plotters' secret was real. But there was a plan they could not see, running over theirs. A concise commentary explains the outcome in one line: Allah raised ʿĪsā, and the plot fell on someone else.
Here the ego of every strategist is humbled. We love to feel in control: the plan, the backup, the contingency. Planning is good, and the Quran praises foresight. But the ayah reminds us that every human plan runs inside a larger one. The ego says, 'I have thought of everything'. The ayah answers: you have not thought of Him.
Does Allah need to call Himself the best of planners? He needs nothing (35:15). The title is for us: a comfort to the one plotted against, and a warning to the one plotting.
The board had thought of competitors, markets and shareholders. They had not thought of the letter. Every plotter in history has had a letter he did not see coming.
