Ali 'Imran 3:86
“How shall Allāh guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and had witnessed that the Messenger is true and clear signs had come to them? And Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah does not guide those who reject faith after believing and witnessing clear proof, for as long as they persist in misplacing everything.
A reflection
Guidance is not a coat you can hang up and fetch later
A young man tells a friend he will 'get back into religion' later, perhaps after his thirties. He assumes faith will be waiting on its hook, exactly where he left it, ready to be put on again.
The ayah asks a question that unsettles that assumption. 'How would Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief?' A concise commentary explains the 'how' as a denial: He does not. A modern commentary adds: He does not grant success to people who chose disbelief over faith, after the proofs had reached them.
Guidance is His. It is not a possession we keep in a cupboard. It is a gift, given and sustained moment by moment. To throw it away while assuming we can take it back on our own schedule is a kind of arrogance. It treats the Giver as a cloakroom attendant.
Yet the ayah is not a sentence of hopelessness. A classical commentator raises the obvious objection: we have seen many who left Islam and later returned, guided. He answers that the ayah means Allah does not guide them while they persist in their disbelief and wrongdoing. When they turn back, He grants them that turning. Three ayat later, the door is named outright: 'except those who repent'.
So the ayah humbles the ego from two sides. It warns those who assume they can return whenever they like. And it reminds everyone that even return is a gift. No one finds his way back to Allah without Allah.
