Ali 'Imran 3:85

“And whoever desires other than Islām as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Whoever seeks a way of life other than submission to Allah will not have it accepted, and will be among the losers in the Hereafter.

A reflection

Is this ayah intolerant?

Over lunch, a colleague says that any religion claiming to be the only way is dangerous. A minute later she adds that all religions are equally valid paths, and that this is the only reasonable view. Her Muslim friend smiles. Even the claim that no claim is true is a claim.

This ayah is one of the Quran's clearest statements of exclusivity, and it deserves an honest answer, not a softened one. The commentators read it plainly. A modern commentary defines the islām meant here as surrender to Allah in His oneness and obedience. It adds faith in His final Messenger ﷺ, and following him. Whoever seeks another way, it says, will not have it accepted.

But three things belong alongside it.

First, the judgement is Allah's, not ours. The ayah speaks of acceptance before Him and loss in the Hereafter. It gives no human being the right to decide anyone's fate. The Quran also says: 'We never punish until We have sent a messenger' (17:15). Scholars have written at length on those whom the message never truly reached.

Second, a claim about truth is not permission for coercion. 'There is no compulsion in religion' (2:256).

Third, the same surah opened its door to dialogue (3:64). It praised the honest among the People of the Book (3:75).

So the ayah is serious, and it is not an invitation to contempt. It asks each reader to take the question of truth seriously, and leaves the verdict where it belongs.
