Ar-Rum 30:45

“That He may reward those who have believed and done righteous deeds out of His bounty. Indeed, He does not like the disbelievers.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah rewards believers who do good from His bounty, not from a ledger; and to lose His love is the deepest loss.

A reflection

Nobody walks in waving a receipt

The ayah gives the reason for the bed-making in the ayah before it. The righteous prepare 'that He may reward' them. Then three small words change the whole account: min faḍlihi, from His bounty.

A classical commentator drew it out with a picture of a king. When a great and generous king promises a servant a reward, what arrives is more than the servant expected. Now the King of kings adds a second promise. In effect He says: I will not reward you from justice, but from bounty. Hope, the commentator said, grows twice over.

This is where the ego has to sit down. Pride lives on the feeling of having earned. It keeps a ledger and enjoys reading it. I prayed, I gave, I fasted, so I am owed. The ayah does not deny the deeds. It names them: belief and righteous work. But it lifts the reward clean out of the ledger. Even the strength to do the deeds was His gift first.

Picture a translator working through a weekend on a rush job. She invoices four hundred pounds. A cheque arrives for four thousand. With it comes a note: for your patience with my mother on the telephone. The invoice is now almost irrelevant. She could frame it, but she could never point to it and claim she earned the cheque.

That is the believer's position on the Last Day, magnified beyond measure. Nobody walks into Paradise waving a receipt.

Does this make Allah's dealings arbitrary? The opposite. Justice is guaranteed, and nothing good is lost. Bounty is what He lays on top. The arrogant ask what they are owed. The humble ask what He might give.
