Ar-Rum الروم
Makki · 60 ayat · 60 with pondering
- Ayah 1Three unexplained letters guard an opening a calendar could check: a forecast about two empires, spoken into a gloating city.
- Ayah 2Two words report a great power's defeat, told straight: the side the believers hoped for had lost, and Makkah was celebrating.
- Ayah 3Beaten in 'the nearest land', a word that also means the lowest, the Romans are promised a reversal, and the grammar turns over with them.
- Ayah 4Between a promised span and a promised joy stands one line: the command was Allah's before the defeat and after it.
- Ayah 5Victory is named as Allah’s help before anyone’s win: given where He wills, by One Mighty enough to give it and Merciful in giving.
- Ayah 6Two words seal a promise the world could check, and the name of Allah comes twice: the promise holds because of who made it.
- Ayah 7Knowing how the world works but not where it is going is, in this ayah, no different from not knowing at all.
- Ayah 8Look into yourself first, then up at the sky: nothing in either was made idle, and everything in both has a named day to end.
- Ayah 9Stronger nations ploughed deeper, built more and lived longer, were warned with clear proofs, and fell: Allah wronged none of them; they wronged themselves.
- Ayah 10Those who did ugly things met the ugliest end: the outcome carries the same name as the deed that led to it.
- Ayah 11After empires and ruined nations, a sentence opens with His name: He begins creation, repeats it, and brings you back to Him.
- Ayah 12When the Hour stands, those who gathered wrongdoing for themselves fall silent: hope cut off, argument gone, nothing left to say.
- Ayah 13Whatever was set up beside Allah stands nowhere near its followers when they need it most, and they end by disowning it themselves.
- Ayah 14The Hour that gathers everyone also parts them, cleanly and for ever, each to the side their life was already leaning.
- Ayah 15Those who believed and did good are placed in a meadow beyond description, where joy keeps arriving and shows on their faces.
- Ayah 16Those who covered the truth, called His signs lies and denied the meeting are brought into the punishment, and kept there, never absent from it.
- Ayah 17Straight after the two groups are parted, the surah turns: declare Allah far above every flaw as each evening falls and each morning breaks.
- Ayah 18All praise in the heavens and the earth is already His; the believer joins it as afternoon light thins and as noon arrives.
- Ayah 19Life comes from death and death from life every day; the One who moves both ways says: so you will be brought out.
- Ayah 20From dust, the stillest and least living thing, He made you, and suddenly there you are: human, aware, spreading across the earth.
- Ayah 21Two people of one kind find stillness in each other, and between them He places an affection and a mercy that no blood tie explains.
- Ayah 22Allah puts your tongue and your skin on the same list as the heavens and the earth: every difference is His signature, never a ranking.
- Ayah 23Every night the whole world goes still and every morning it goes seeking, and both, says Allah, are signs for anyone willing to listen.
- Ayah 24Lightning He shows you and rain He sends: a sign for those whose reason holds the eye on the sky long enough to ask who.
- Ayah 25The sky and earth keep standing because He commands it, and the same command will one day call every buried person out at once.
- Ayah 26Everyone in the heavens and earth is His and already yields to Him; the only obedience left for you to give is the willing kind.
- Ayah 27He began you and He will bring you back; He reasons with you in your own measure, then reminds you that nothing is like Him.
- Ayah 28You would never make someone you own an equal partner in your provision; how then could anything He owns share what is His?
- Ayah 29The problem was never a lack of proof: desire, followed without knowledge, leads where no guide and no helper can follow.
- Ayah 30Before anyone taught you a word, you were made leaning towards your Lord; now turn your face the way you were made.
- Ayah 31The nature of the ayah before becomes a daily practice: keep coming back, keep guarded, keep the prayer standing, and give no one a share.
- Ayah 32Splitting a religion into parties is described here by its feeling: each group delighted with what it holds, as if delight were proof.
- Ayah 33Harm only touches, and people cry to their Lord alone; mercy is only tasted, and some at once hand the credit to others.
- Ayah 34The line met at 16:55 returns, now spoken straight to the rescued who drifted back: enjoy it, then, and you will come to know.
- Ayah 35One question takes the ground from every partner set beside Allah: where is the warrant for it, and does it speak?
- Ayah 36A heart that soars with every gift and crashes at every loss has been watching the weather, not the One who sends it.
- Ayah 37Plenty and scarcity are both His decision in plain sight, signs that, read rightly, neither swell the ego nor break the heart.
- Ayah 38Since Allah spreads and measures provision, the open hand loses nothing: give kin, the needy and the stranded traveller their due, for His face.
- Ayah 39What is given to swell back from people stops growing there, while what is given for Allah's face makes the givers themselves the multiplied.
- Ayah 40Your whole life fits in four of His verbs, from creation to the rising, and nothing you lean on can perform one of them.
- Ayah 41Corruption on land and sea was carried there by human hands, and Allah lets us taste part of it so that we turn back.
- Ayah 42After the corruption, the ruins: travel, look at how earlier peoples ended, and notice that most of them had given Allah partners.
- Ayah 43Turn wholly to the upright religion now, before a Day comes from Allah that nobody can send back, when people crack apart into two companies.
- Ayah 44Unbelief settles its weight on the one who chose it, while every righteous deed is a bed its doer is smoothing for himself.
- Ayah 45Allah rewards believers who do good from His bounty, not from a ledger; and to lose His love is the deepest loss.
- Ayah 46The winds He sends carry rain, relief, ships and livelihoods, each a taste of His mercy, so that we learn to thank the Sender.
- Ayah 47Messengers came with clear proofs, the guilty were repaid, and Allah has bound Himself, freely, to help those who believe.
- Ayah 48Wind, cloud, rain and a sudden joy: every link in the chain is His, and the gladness lands only where He wills it to land.
- Ayah 49Before the rain came, and long before that, they had given up; Allah saw that despair in full, and the joy was measured against it.
- Ayah 50Look at what mercy leaves on dead ground: the One who does that is already the Giver of life to the dead.
- Ayah 51One scorching wind, one yellowed field, and the same people who rejoiced spend the day denying every favour that came before.
- Ayah 52Opening a closed heart was never the caller's work; yours is to call clearly, gently, and without force, and to stay a hearer yourself.
- Ayah 53You can walk ahead and show the way, but turning a heart from its straying is Allah's; those who truly hear are those who yield.
- Ayah 54Your strength stands between two weaknesses, each placed by Allah, who knows every stage of you and is able to bring it about.
- Ayah 55When the Hour stands, a wasted life will seem like an hour, and the habit of lying will still be on the tongue.
- Ayah 56Those given knowledge and faith answer the guesses with what Allah wrote: you stayed exactly as decreed, and this is the Day you denied.
- Ayah 57On that Day excuses no longer help the wrongdoers, and no one asks them to make amends; today the asking is still open.
- Ayah 58Every kind of example has been given; a verdict reached before the evidence will call the next sign a trick, whatever it is.
- Ayah 59A refusal repeated long enough stops being a choice and becomes a nature; the seal falls on hearts that would not seek to know.
- Ayah 60Ar-Rum ends with an order to hold steady: the promise is true, so let no one without certainty make you light enough to blow away.
