Luqman 31:3
هُدًى وَرَحْمَةً لِّلْمُحْسِنِينَ
“As guidance and mercy for the doers of good”
Saheeh International
Essence
The wise Book is guidance and mercy for those who do things beautifully, worshipping as if they see Him and giving more than they owe.
A reflection
Not simply a nice person
Translations offer 'the doers of good', 'the righteous', 'those who do good'. In English these sound like a mild compliment. A good person, a kind neighbour, someone who gives to charity.
The Arabic word is muḥsin, and its root is ḥusn, beauty. The lexicons hold two beauties in it: the beauty of a thing, and the beauty of doing a thing well. Iḥsān is giving more than you owe. It is also doing the job so well that it is lovely to look at.
And it reaches worship. One classical commentator defines the muḥsin here with the Prophet's own words, which both Sahihs record. Iḥsān is to worship Allah as though you see Him; and if you do not see Him, He sees you. A concise commentary widens it: doing deeds well, fulfilling the rights of their Lord and the rights of His servants.
Picture a primary-school caretaker. The job sheet says: sweep the playground. Every spring he also repaints the faded hopscotch squares, the numbers in bright yellow, the edges straight. Nobody asked. No one inspects it. On Monday the infants hop all morning.
That is closer to muḥsin than 'nice'. It is not a matter of temperament but of quality: the extra that was not owed, done beautifully, for One who sees.
It also means the word is not a club for the naturally gentle. A brusque, shy or awkward person can be a muḥsin, and a charming one can fail to be. The question is not how pleasant you seem. It is whether what you do, for Allah and for people, carries that mark: more than required, and well made.
The ayah says this Book is guidance and mercy for such people. That is an invitation in the shape of a description. Anyone can begin today with one task done beautifully.
