Al-Ahzab 33:14

“And if they had been entered upon from all its [surrounding] regions and fitnah [i.e., disbelief] had been demanded of them, they would have done it and not hesitated over it except briefly.”

Essence

Had the city been entered from every side and they been asked to abandon their faith, they would have handed it over almost at once.

A reflection

Two answers to the same request

This ayah imagines a request and gives the hypocrites' answer: la-ātawhā, they would have handed it over.

Now listen to a song from the same trench. Sahih al-Bukhari preserves it from the Companion al-Bara'. He saw the Prophet ﷺ carrying earth on the Day of the Confederates, dust covering his chest, chanting lines as he worked. One of them ran: those people have wronged us; whenever they wanted fitna, we refused.

Abaynā, we refused. The same word, fitna, appears in both places. The enemy wanted to pull the believers away from their faith. The Prophet's men put their refusal into a work song and sang it while digging. The hypocrites, according to this ayah, would not even need to be pushed. Ask, and they would give.

That contrast is the heart of the ayah. The two groups stood in the same camp, dug the same trench, and heard the same armies. The difference was not in the danger. It was in the answer already formed inside each of them before the question came.

Notice too where the believers' refusal lived. Not in a private resolution, but in a song shared while they worked. Faith that is sung together, aloud, in hard labour, becomes harder to surrender alone in the dark. The hypocrites had no such song. Their faith had never been rehearsed out loud.

This is something you can practise. The early Muslims did not wait for the siege to decide their answer. They put it into words they repeated with their hands busy. Lā ilāha illā Allāh said a thousand times on ordinary days is the rehearsal of abaynā.

So ask yourself what you already say aloud, with others, about what you will not give up. If the answer is nothing, that is the work. Find the words now, while the ground is still, so that when someone asks for your fitna, your tongue already knows its line.
