Essence
Give the first light and the last light of each day to declaring Him flawless, and let the angels find you there.
A reflection
A word about distance
Anyone who has bought a newly built house knows the snagging list. A door that sticks. A hairline crack along the ceiling. A tap that drips by the second week. The newer the house, the longer the list. Everything made by hands arrives with one.
Sabbiḥūhu: glorify Him. The lexicons explain tasbīḥ as tanzīh, declaring Him clear of everything unworthy, and tanzīh means putting at a distance. The Arabs said subḥāna, how far, in sheer wonder at a gap. The same letters carry swimming, and the stars gliding through their orbits. To glorify is to say: there is no snagging list here. Not a flaw, not a lack, not a partner, not a weakness.
Now notice what that does to the one saying it. We spend real effort hiding our own list. The photograph chosen from twelve. The story told with the awkward part removed. The ego is a polished show home with every crack painted over. Subḥān Allāh is a sentence that only makes sense with the gap admitted. He is far above. We are not.
One commentary explains why this kind of remembrance is singled out from all the others. Jibrīl and Mīkāʾīl are named apart from the other angels; in the same way, this praise is named apart. Declaring Him free of all imperfection stands above the rest.
Does He need us to say it? No. Allah is free of all need (35:15), and our words add nothing to Him. The sentence is for the speaker. It restores the true distance between a creature and his Creator. There is rest in that distance. The one who stops pretending to be flawless can stop guarding the show home.
