Al-Ahzab · Madani · ayah 43 of 73
Al-Ahzab 33:43
“It is He who confers blessing upon you,[1204] and His angels [ask Him to do so] that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And ever is He, to the believers, Merciful.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Before you remembered Him, He turned to you in mercy, with His angels praying, to lead you out of every darkness into one light.
A reflection
Mentioned in a room you will never enter
A junior analyst steps into a lift and hears two directors talking. One of them says her name. She did good work on the merger, he says, and the board should know. The doors open and they walk out. For a week she replays those few words on the bus, at her desk, before sleep.
Most of us know that hunger. We want to be spoken of well in rooms we will never enter. Much of modern life is built to feed it: endorsements, reviews, a name in the acknowledgements. And much of our anxiety is wondering what is said about us when we are absent.
The ayah answers that hunger from an unexpected height. Huwa alladhī yuṣallī ʿalaykum: it is He who sends ṣalāh upon you. An early reader, quoted in Sahih al-Bukhari, explained Allah's ṣalāh on a servant as His praise of him before the angels. Others said it is His mercy. One classical commentator saw no conflict between the two. The sentence opens with huwa, He, set first for emphasis. Not a director, not a crowd. He.
This shrinks the ego in two ways at once. First, it moves the only mention that finally matters out of our control. No one networks their way into that assembly. Second, the next words remove our last claim to credit. He brings you out of the darkness. You did not climb out alone.
So a familiar doubt answers itself here. Some find it vain that God commands people to remember Him, as the two ayat before this do. Read one ayah further and the order turns round. The One who needs nothing praises first, and He praises us. The one who hungers for praise was never Him.
