Fatir 35:11

“And Allāh created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop; then He made you mates. And no female conceives nor does she give birth except with His knowledge. And no aged person is granted [additional] life nor is his lifespan lessened but that it is in a register. Indeed, that for Allāh is easy.”

Essence

From dust to a drop to a pair, every pregnancy known, every lifespan written to its last day, and all of it easy for Allah.

A reflection

Easy, for Him

Every ten years many countries attempt a census. Thousands of staff knock on doors, post forms and chase the missing. It takes years and costs a fortune. The figures are out of date before they are printed, because people were born and died while the counting went on.

Now read what this ayah lays out in one breath. Every human being, from the first handful of dust. Every conception, in every womb, on every night. Every birth. Every lifespan that runs long, and every one cut short. All of it known, all of it written. Then four quiet words close the ayah: inna dhālika ʿalā Allāhi yasīr. That is easy for Allah.

The word is not 'possible', or 'within His power'. It is 'easy'. Where our best institutions strain, there is no strain at all.

That deflates something in us. We are proud of keeping track: the colour-coded diary, the spreadsheet, the app that logs our steps. We like to feel in command of our own timeline. Yet we cannot say when we will fall ill, or how many birthdays remain. The ego's sense of control is real only at the smallest scale.

The commentators draw out why 'easy' is said here. The ayah comes just after the promise of rising (35:9). One classical commentator reads it as an argument. He needs no means and no tools for any of this. So raising the dead is no harder for Him than the first creation was.

Does He tell us this is easy to impress us, like someone boasting about a workload? The reverse. A boast needs an audience to make it true. This sentence is true whether anyone hears it or not. It is said for our sake, so that a small, finite creature can rest. Your life is not a file that might be lost in the system. Nothing about you is too small, or too numerous, for Him to hold.
