Fatir 35:41
“Indeed, Allāh holds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease. And if they should cease, no one could hold them [in place] after Him. Indeed, He is Forbearing[1256] and Forgiving.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah alone keeps the heavens and earth from slipping away; no one else could hold them, and He holds them with forbearance towards His deniers.
A reflection
The palm beneath the swimmer's belly
A father stands waist-deep in the shallow end of a pool. His three-year-old daughter lies face down on the water, arms windmilling, legs kicking white foam. She is shouting that she is swimming. She is not. Her father's flat palm is under her stomach, moving with her. If he lifted it she would sink at once. She has no idea it is there. She only knows she is doing beautifully.
Inna Allāha yumsiku al-samāwāti wa-al-arḍa an tazūlā. Allah holds the heavens and the earth lest they cease. The verb yumsiku is in the present tense. It is not a hold He took once at creation and then let go. It is happening now, in this second, under the floor you are sitting on.
Then the ayah closes every other door. Wa-la-in zālatā in amsakahumā min aḥadin min baʿdih. And if they ceased, no one at all could hold them after Him. One commentator notes the small word min before aḥad: it widens the denial to cover every possible one. No angel, no prophet, no system, no idol named in the ayah before.
This is the place where the ego has to stop kicking for a moment. We plan careers, build homes, and talk about standing on our own two feet. But the feet stand on an earth that is being held. The sky we take for granted above the roof is being held. Our boldest strokes are made over a palm we cannot see.
Does He remind us of this to be admired? The girl's father does not hold her to be thanked. He holds her because she would drown otherwise. Knowing the palm is there does not make her swim worse. It makes her stop boasting, and start trusting the one who holds.
