Al-Inshiqaq 84:1
إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتْ
“When the sky has split [open]”
Saheeh International
Essence
The oldest roof there is, which no one built and no one repairs, gives way like split firewood at a word from its Lord.
A reflection
A design life nobody wrote down
At the opening of a new bridge, someone asks the engineer how long it will last. She answers without hesitating: its design life is a hundred and twenty years. Everything we build comes with a number like that. Roofs, dams, towers, even the tarmac on your road has a date by which it is expected to fail.
No human has ever given the sky one. It is the oldest roof there is. The Quran calls it a structure built with strength (51:47), seven strong layers above you (78:12). No one has patched it or inspected it. It has simply held, over every generation that ever looked up.
Then the surah opens with one plain sentence: idhā al-samāʾu inshaqqat, when the sky splits. The verb names no one doing the splitting. The sky simply gives way. The first hearers used this root for firewood split along its grain, for a wall that cracks, for skin chapped by the wind. The strongest thing they knew is described in the vocabulary of kindling.
Now bring it down to our size. Each of us lives under smaller skies that feel just as permanent. A job that has always been there. A reputation. A body that has never let us down. A family name that opens doors. Pride quietly assumes that these have no design life. The ayah does not mock them. It simply places them under a sky that will one day split, and lets us ask how long our own ceilings will hold.
Someone may ask whether this is God showing off, like a strongman bending iron bars for the crowd. But a crowd's applause adds nothing to Him. 'Whoever strives only strives for himself. Indeed, Allah is free of need of the worlds' (29:6). A warning given before the event is the opposite of vanity. It is spoken for the listener's sake, while the listener can still act on it.
So the humbling is also a release. You were never meant to hold up your own sky. The One who holds up the real one has told you, in advance, that it too answers to Him.
