Ya-Sin 36:39

وَٱلْقَمَرَ قَدَّرْنَـٰهُ مَنَازِلَ حَتَّىٰ عَادَ كَٱلْعُرْجُونِ ٱلْقَدِيمِ

“And the moon - We have determined for it phases, until it returns [appearing] like the old date stalk.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The moon is a traveller with a lodging for every night, returning at the month's end like the old stalk left on a palm.

A reflection

A lodging booked for every night

A fisherman on a northern coast mends his nets on the harbour wall and plans his week by the age of the moon. He does not need an app. He knows which nights will bring the big tides and which will be slack. His grandfather fished the same way. The moon has never once let either of them down.

The ayah says why. Qaddarnāhu manāzila: We measured it out in stations. The commentators count them: twenty-eight, one for each night, with the moon hidden for a night or two at the month's end. One adds that it alights at each station without skipping it or falling short, on an even measure that does not vary.

The word for stations, manāzil, has a picture in it. The lexicons give manzil as the camp where a traveller dismounts and sets down his load, the place prepared for a guest. So the moon is described as a traveller with a lodging booked for every night of its journey. It arrives at each one on time.

The ego is quietly measured here. Whole civilisations have run their calendars by this traveller. The months of fasting and pilgrimage are counted from its first thin appearance. The commentators quote the ayah calling the new moons timings for people and for the pilgrimage (2:189). Our sacred year keeps His appointments, not ours.

We like to feel we organise our lives. We buy planners and set reminders. But the deepest rhythm in a Muslim's year is set by an object no one has ever adjusted by a single night. The fisherman knows this in his bones. The pride of the planner meets a calendar written in the sky, by Someone else, to a measure that does not drift.
