Ya-Sin 36:50
فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ تَوْصِيَةً وَلَآ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمْ يَرْجِعُونَ
“And they will not be able [to give] any instruction, nor to their people can they return.”
Saheeh International
Essence
At the blast there is no time to tie the last thread to those you love, and no road home but the one to Allah.
A reflection
Not a missing document but a missing word
It is easy to hear "they will not be able to make a bequest" as a remark about paperwork. No time to draw up a will, no chance to divide the property. A legal footnote to the end of the world.
The word reaches much further than that. The lexicons give the root of tawṣiya as joining one thing to another. Land is wāṣiya when its plants grow so thick they join into one cover. To work through the night into the morning is to join night to day. A waṣiyya is speech that joins: a charge handed to someone else to act on, carried with earnest counsel. It links the one who leaves to the one who stays.
One commentator notes that the bequest meant here is in any of their affairs, while they are among their families. A concise commentary adds simply that they will not be able to instruct one another. It is not only property that goes unassigned. It is every last word.
That is the truer picture. The blast does not merely cancel a will. It cuts the thread before it can be tied. The father cannot tell his son what he always meant to say. The mother cannot leave the instruction she kept for the right moment. The friend cannot ask forgiveness for the thing that sat between them.
This entry gives no rulings about wills; that belongs elsewhere. Its point is simpler and harder. Most of the important things we mean to say, we are saving for later. The ayah describes a later that does not come.
So tie the thread now. Say the counsel, the thanks, the apology, while the joining is still possible.
