As-Saffat 37:116

وَنَصَرْنَـٰهُمْ فَكَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ

“And We supported them so it was they who overcame.”

Saheeh International

Essence

A people with no army and bent necks were helped by Allah, and it was they, not Pharaoh, who ended up on top.

A reflection

Help that falls like rain

And We helped them. The verb is naṣara, and the lexicons give it a picture that is established and lovely. Rain naṣara a land when it reached it and made it grow. A rained-on land was manṣūra. Streams that ran down from far off to swell a valley's flood were called nawāṣir, helpers. Only from there does the word come to mean aid given to the wronged against the one who wrongs them.

That image says something about who owns the help. Rain is not manufactured on the ground. It arrives. A narration-based commentary lists what the Israelites had suffered before it came. Sons were killed and women kept alive for service. A whole people was used for the lowest work. They had no army and no plan that could have beaten Pharaoh. Then the help came, and the commentary says they took the land and wealth their oppressors had spent a lifetime gathering.

Picture a smallholder in a dry valley. For three summers he has tried pumps, channels and borrowed tankers. Then one night the rain comes. He goes out into the yard bare-headed and stands in it. He knows, in his body, that he did not make a single drop.

The ayah asks us to stand in the yard like that. Our victories arrive the same way, and the ego is quick to forget it. We remember the pumps and the long nights and say, I did this. The Quran records a man who said exactly that about his wealth: he was given it, he claimed, because of knowledge he had (28:78).

Allah does not need us to credit Him. He is telling us the truth for our sake. Pride in a win is the first crack in it. Humility after a win keeps the land green. We helped them is a sentence to say over every success, quietly, before anyone else has had a chance to congratulate you.
