As-Saffat 37:40

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

“But not the chosen servants of Allāh.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Four words turn the whole surah from the Fire to the Garden: except the sincere servants of Allah.

A reflection

What is left when the dregs have sunk

The Bedouin made clarified butter in a pot over the fire. They threw in a handful of dates or parched barley. The dregs clung to these and sank to the bottom. The clear fat that rose to the top was called the khulāṣa, and the act of drawing it off was ikhlāṣ. Gold and silver that fire had cleared of dross were khilāṣ too.

That is the first picture inside al-mukhlaṣīn. The lexicons give the root kh-l-ṣ the sense of purifying: taking out what was mixed in. So ikhlāṣ is not a warm feeling of sincerity. It is a process. Heat, separation, and what is left when the rest has gone.

The commentaries record two readings of the word, and both fit the picture. The reading with a fatḥa, mukhlaṣīn, means those whom Allah has purified and chosen for His obedience and His closeness. The reading with a kasra, mukhliṣīn, means those who purified their worship for Allah. One describes what He did to them. The other describes what they did for Him.

Held together, the two readings describe a partnership. The servant does the work of clearing out what is mixed in: showing off, the wish for praise, worship with half an eye on people. And Allah purifies, chooses and keeps them. The dates sink. The clear fat rises. Neither happens without the fire.

That is good news for ordinary people who always care a little what others think. Sincerity is not a state you must already be in. It is a clearing you keep doing, and He completes. These are the people excepted from the punishment just described (37:38-39).
