As-Saffat 37:139

وَإِنَّ يُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

“And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Before any word of the flight or the fish, Yunus is given the same title as every other messenger: his rank comes before his slip.

A reflection

The same opening line, with no asterisk

Read the stories of this surah's closing stretch side by side and one sentence repeats almost word for word. Wa-inna ilyāsa la-mina al-mursalīn: and Ilyas was surely one of the messengers (37:123). Wa-inna lūṭan la-mina al-mursalīn: and Lut was surely one of the messengers (37:133). Then, wa-inna yūnusa la-mina al-mursalīn.

The same two marks of emphasis open each one: inna, surely, and the la- that strengthens it. Yunus does not get a softer version. He does not get 'Yunus, too, was sent, though…'. His story is the one that contains a flight, a lottery lost three times and a man swallowed while blameworthy. And it opens exactly as the stories of men who never ran.

That is a deliberate act of honour. A theological commentary makes the point directly. The description is given here to honour him. It only does that if he truly was a messenger in Allah's sight.

Think of a register of names read out at a school prize-giving. One pupil sat out half a year after a family crisis and came back to finish. The head reads his name in the same voice, with the same pause, as everyone else's. Nobody in the hall hears a footnote, and that silence is the kindest thing in the ceremony.

The ayah does something similar, but with far more at stake. Allah knows every detail of what follows. He tells it Himself, in the next nine ayat, without hiding any of it. Yet He sets the title first, at full strength, so the reader meets the man before the mistake.

There is a lesson for how we tell other people's stories. Most of us lead with the fall: 'You know him, the one who…'. The Quran leads with the rank and lets the fall sit inside it. The slip is real and recorded. It is not the headline.
