As-Saffat 37:147
وَأَرْسَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِا۟ئَةِ أَلْفٍ أَوْ يَزِيدُونَ
“And We sent him[1306] to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The man who ran from one people is sent to a hundred thousand or more: the mission was never withdrawn, only waiting for him.
A reflection
The mission is the frame; the fall is the parenthesis
Look at the shape of the whole passage. It opens with wa-inna yūnusa la-mina al-mursalīn: Yunus was one of those sent (37:139). It closes, nine ayat later, with wa-arsalnāhu: and We sent him (37:147). Between those two statements of sending sit the flight, the lottery, the fish, the shore and the gourd.
A linguistic commentary sees this structure clearly. On the reading of several early commentators, this sending is the first one, the mission before the fish. The commentary explains why it is placed here. It shows the beginning and end of his state, and the purpose of the sending, which was faith. The story of the fish, it says, was set in between because of its strangeness and the care given to it.
Other commentators held this was a second sending, after the fish, to the same people or to another. A narration-based commentary sees no conflict: he may have been sent first, then ordered back to them after he came out. Either way, the sentence that closes the story is not about the fish. It is about the mission.
That shape is a mercy. The lapse is real, but it is enclosed. It sits inside a life defined by being sent, like a hard chapter inside a book whose first and last pages say who you are.
Think of a woman who stepped away from nursing for two years after a breakdown. When she tells her story now, she begins with qualifying, and ends with her current ward. The two years are in the middle, spoken of honestly. They do not get the first word or the last.
Allah tells Yunus's story in that order. If you are living through a parenthesis now, take heart from the grammar. With Him, the closing line of a believer's story is not usually the fall.
