As-Saffat 37:173

وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَ

“And [that] indeed, Our soldiers [i.e., the believers] will be those who overcome.[1314]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Those who are truly Allah's forces will prevail; the honour lies in the word 'Our', and it is kept only by living up to it.

A reflection

He needs no army

Jundanā: Our forces. The word is short and the possessive is enormous. Allah calls a body of people His own. One commentator explains that He attributes them to Himself to honour them and raise their standing.

But who needs forces? A king does, because without soldiers he is just a man in a palace. The Quran answers the question of Allah's need elsewhere, twice in one surah. 'To Allah belong the forces of the heavens and the earth' (48:4, 48:7). The second time it adds: 'and Allah is Mighty, Wise'. The angels, the winds, the rain, every created thing can be His force. He has no shortage of soldiers. He does not need to recruit.

Picture an old recruitment poster on a station wall. A young man in uniform, chin up, with a slogan about belonging and purpose. It works because people hunger to be part of something bigger. And it can also feed a certain pride: I am one of them now, the strong ones, the winners.

That pride is exactly what this ayah quietly dismantles. Being among Allah's forces is not a rank you earn and then wear. It is an honour He gives because He chooses to use you, when He could use the wind instead. The ego that boasts of being on the winning side has misread the poster. The forces prevail because they are His, not because they are impressive.

Someone may ask: if Allah needs no one, why does He speak of 'Our forces' at all? Isn't an army a sign of need? The answer is that Allah's use of His servants is for their sake. Whoever strives, strives only for himself; Allah is free of need of the worlds (29:6). He lets people share in the work of truth as a gift, the way a master craftsman lets an apprentice hold the chisel.

To be called 'Ours' by Allah is the highest honour a creature can have. It should make us humble, never proud.
