إِنَّهُمْ لَهُمُ ٱلْمَنصُورُونَ
“[That] indeed, they would be those given victory”

Essence
The messengers are the ones who will be helped: victory comes to them the way rain comes to dry ground, received rather than seized.
A reflection
Help that falls like rain
Manṣūrūn comes from a root that the first hearers associated with weather as much as with war. The classical lexicons say the root means good that comes to someone and is given to them. The Arabs said rain naṣarat the earth: it helped the land, watering it until it grew. A rained-on land was manṣūra. The streams that ran from far off into a valley and swelled its flood were called nawāṣir, helpers. Only from there does the root name the help that reaches someone under attack, until they prevail. These usages are established.
Picture a hanging basket by a front door at the end of a hot August. The petunias are brown and crisp, the soil shrunk away from the sides. The owner has given up on it. Then one night it rains, steadily, for hours. In the morning the soil is dark again. By the weekend there are new green shoots among the dead stems. The basket did nothing. It was helped.
Now read the ayah: they are the ones who will be helped. The word is passive. The messengers are not described as conquerors who seize victory by their own force. They are described as land that rain falls on. Help comes to them from outside, from Allah, the way the streams run down into a valley from hills you cannot see.
That changes the feeling of the promise. Victory, in this picture, is not the reward of the strongest. It is the gift to the faithful. The messengers' part was to remain: to stay planted, to keep the soil ready, to not uproot themselves when the drought was long.
For anyone in a dry season, this is the image to hold. You may not be able to make it rain. You can stay in the ground. Pray, keep the commands, remain where Allah placed you. The help, when it comes, comes from beyond the hills.
