As-Saffat 37:24

وَقِفُوهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسْـُٔولُونَ

“And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned."”

Saheeh International

Essence

The procession towards the Fire is halted by two words, because nobody is taken anywhere before they have been asked.

A reflection

The procession that stops on one word

A private jet is fuelled, the engines are running, and its owner is used to the world arranging itself around his diary. Then the tower says one word: hold. The jet sits on the tarmac. Nobody aboard can do anything about it.

This ayah is that moment on a scale no airport has ever known. The ones being led are the wrongdoers of every age, gathered with their likes and with everything they worshipped besides Allah (37:22-23). Among them are people who were never once stopped in their lives. Nobody questioned their spending, their orders or their cruelty. And the procession halts on a single command: wa-qifūhum, stop them.

The commentators note who is speaking. It is Allah, addressing the angels who drive the crowd. He does not argue with the crowd or raise His voice. He says stop, and everything stops.

Sit with that for a moment, because it is aimed at the ego. Most of us have a small kingdom where we are rarely questioned. A department, a household, a group chat, an online following. Pride grows quietly in places where nobody asks us anything. The ayah reminds us that there is a word which ends all such kingdoms at once.

A sceptic may ask whether this is simply a display of power. Why would the All-Knowing need to question anyone? The commentaries answer that the questioning is not for His information. One view is that it establishes the proof against them: did messengers not come to you (6:130)? He knows already. They are made to know that He knows.

And He loses nothing if they refuse to answer, and gains nothing if they do. The question is for them. It is the last courtesy of justice: no one is sent anywhere without first being asked.
