Al-Inshiqaq 84:8
فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا
“He will be judged with an easy account”
Saheeh International
Essence
The easy reckoning is not a search through every line but a private showing, a covering, and a pardon.
A reflection
Everything listed, then every penalty waived
A woman opens a brown envelope from the tax office with her heart in her throat. It lists every late payment she made over five years, with dates and amounts. She reads down the page, each line heavier than the last. Then she reaches the final paragraph. All penalties have been waived. She sits down on the stairs and laughs out loud.
That is close to what the Prophet ﷺ described when he explained this ayah. He said: 'Whoever is scrutinised in the reckoning will be punished'. ʿĀʾisha never let a puzzle pass. She asked at once whether Allah had not said 'he will be reckoned with an easy reckoning'. He replied: 'That is only the presentation. Whoever is scrutinised in the reckoning will be ruined.' The hadith is in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
So the easy reckoning is a showing, not an audit. A later scholar of the heart explains what happens in it. Allah shows each person his deeds, for nothing is hidden that Day (69:18). The servant sees it all, until he thinks he will not be saved. Then Allah saves him by His pardon, His forgiveness and His mercy.
Sahih al-Bukhari preserves the scene in the Prophet's ﷺ own words. Allah brings His servant near and places His cover over him. He asks: did you do this, and this? The servant says: yes, my Lord. In one version, he sees in himself that he is finished. Then Allah says: 'I covered it for you in the world, and I forgive it for you today'. Then he is given the book of his good deeds.
The word yasīr, easy, carries a gentle picture. The Arabs used the root for a mare with light legs that stepped easily. They used it for flocks that gave birth easily, with none lost. An easy reckoning is one where nothing is lost and nothing drags.
If you carry old sins like unopened envelopes, this ayah is for you. The list will be read. It must be; that is honesty. But for the one Allah covers, the last line has already been written.
