As-Saffat 37:6

إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ ٱلْكَوَاكِبِ

“Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah has adorned the nearest sky with the stars: a beauty hung above everyone, signed by no name but His.

A reflection

The floodlights and the stars

A man finishes renovating his house. The new stone front cost more than he will admit. To make sure everyone sees it, he fits floodlights that blaze from dusk until dawn. The façade glows. And the whole street, which used to see a scatter of stars on clear nights, now sees nothing above the rooftops but an orange haze.

That is what the ego does with beauty. It wants its own small light to be the one people notice. It will even blot out a greater beauty to be seen.

Now listen to the ayah. Innā zayyannā al-samāʾa al-dunyā bi-zīnatin al-kawākib: We have adorned the nearest sky with an adornment, the stars. One commentator says He adorned it for those who look at it from the earth. The beauty was hung for us.

Notice what is missing. There is no name written across the sky. No plaque, no floodlit signature. Every human being who has ever lain on their back on a summer night has looked at it. Shepherds, sailors, prisoners, children. Most never thought to ask who hung it there.

Someone may ask: why would God care about decoration? Isn't adornment a kind of vanity? In us it often is. We decorate to be admired, to compete, to win something. Allah is free of all need (35:15). He does not need the shepherd's compliment. The beauty is a gift, given to those who look up, and the giver asks for nothing back except that we notice whose it is.

There is a lesson for the floodlit man in all of us. The most beautiful thing you will see tonight is not something you made. Turn off one light, if you can, and look up.
