إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
“But not the chosen servants of Allāh.”

Essence
Out of every nation that fell, something clear rose to the top: the servants Allah purified, who also purified their worship for Him.
A reflection
Ghee rising above the dregs
Al-mukhlaṣīn: the purified ones. The Bedouin knew this root from their cooking pots. They made ghee by heating butter with dates or parched barley thrown in. The dregs clung to the grains and sank. The clear fat that rose to the top was the khulāṣa, and the act was ikhlāṣ. Gold cleared of its dross by fire was named from the same root.
Now set that picture inside this ayah's place in the surah. The ayah before asked us to look at the end of the warned: whole nations gone. Then, in four words, the exception. Out of every boiling pot of history, something clear rose.
The word is read in two ways, and both are preserved. Mukhlaṣīn, with an a, means those whom Allah purified and chose. Mukhliṣīn, with an i, means those who made their religion pure for Allah. One concise commentary holds both together: they were saved for their sincerity in worship, or because Allah purified them for it.
Sincerity, then, is both a fire you sit in and a gift you receive. You do the stirring. He does the separating. Neither happens without the other.
