As-Saffat 37:98

فَأَرَادُوا۟ بِهِۦ كَيْدًا فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمُ ٱلْأَسْفَلِينَ

“And they intended for him a plan [i.e., harm], but We made them the most debased.”

Saheeh International

Essence

They laboured over a scheme to destroy Ibrahim, and Allah made them the lowest: the fire meant to end him became his proof.

A reflection

The plotters at the bottom of the valley

The sentence turns on its pronouns. They wanted a scheme against him. We made them the lowest. The plotters held the wood, the fire and the crowd. In four words, Allah moves them from the top of the scene to the bottom.

The commentaries explain how. One says they became the lowest in argument: Allah gave Ibrahim the upper hand in debate and rescued him from their plan. Another says they were defeated twice, first by his proof and then by the failure of their fire. A third adds that the fire itself became a public sign of his standing, as visible as a host's fire on a hill at night.

Think of a company board that spends months trying to bury a whistle-blower's report. Lawyers, settlements, quiet transfers. In the end the cover-up becomes the headline, and the report is read by far more people than it ever would have been. The plotting was the very thing that exposed them.

This is where pride is humbled. The ego always imagines it is the one acting on events. The ayah shows that above every scheme there is a Planner whose decision settles it.

Someone may ask why Allah announces His victory over them at all. Is that not a kind of boasting? But He gains nothing from it; He is free of need (35:15). The announcement is for the one being plotted against. It is reassurance spoken over every person who has ever stood before a crowd with a fire behind them.
