Az-Zumar 39:25
كَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ فَأَتَىٰهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
“Those before them denied, and punishment came upon them from where they did not perceive.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Nations before them called the truth a lie, and punishment reached them from a direction they never sensed, while they felt entirely safe.
A reflection
From the side you are not watching
From where they did not perceive. Two small words carry the weight of this phrase.
Ḥaythu, where, is described by one lexicon as hardly a root at all. It is a word laid down for any place whatever, left vague on purpose, and filled in only by the clause that follows it. Here the clause that fills it in is a blank: a place they did not perceive. The vagueness is the point.
Yashʿurūn, they perceive, comes from a root with two branches: hair, and knowing. One lexicon joins them. Shaʿartu first meant 'I touched the hair', and from it came 'I knew': a knowing as fine as touching a single hair. The senses are mashāʿir. So 'they did not perceive' means not even that faint touch of awareness reached them.
The commentaries describe the experience. One says the punishment came from a direction that never crossed their minds. While they were safe and comfortable, they were taken by surprise from their very place of safety. Another adds that this is harder on the soul than a danger seen coming.
Picture a sailor crossing open water who scans the horizon ahead for squalls, every few minutes, all afternoon. The wave that capsizes her comes from behind, rising out of a calm sea. She had been watching carefully. She had been watching the wrong side.
That is the ayah's warning in its sharpest form. People who deny the truth often feel very alert. They watch for the dangers they believe in. The ayah says the danger that matters arrives from the one direction they have decided not to look.
