Az-Zumar 39:64
قُلْ أَفَغَيْرَ ٱللَّهِ تَأْمُرُوٓنِّىٓ أَعْبُدُ أَيُّهَا ٱلْجَـٰهِلُونَ
“Say, [O Muḥammad], "Is it other than Allāh that you order me to worship, O ignorant ones?"”

Essence
Offered a compromise in worship, the Prophet ﷺ answers with one astonished question: is it other than Allah you tell me to worship?
A reflection
The compromise that could not be signed
The commentaries record the offer behind this ayah. The idolaters of Makkah said to the Prophet ﷺ: touch some of our gods, and we will believe in your God. One report adds that they invited him to worship their gods, and they would worship his. Another says they told him it was the religion of his forefathers.
On the surface it looked like a reasonable deal. A small gesture on his side, a large concession on theirs. Many negotiators would have taken it.
The ayah's reply is not a counter-offer. It is a question of disbelief: is it other than Allah that you tell me to worship? The grammar is striking. The words 'other than Allah' are pushed to the front of the sentence, before the verb. The shock is concentrated there. Of all the things to bargain with, you bargain with that?
Picture the owner of a small family farm that supplies vegetables to local shops. A large retailer offers her a contract that would triple her income. There is one condition. For a season, she must label some bought-in produce as her own organic crop. Everyone does it, the buyer says. It is just this once. She thinks about it for a night. Then she says no, and keeps selling at the Saturday market.
Every serious life has a few such lines: things that are simply not for sale, whatever the price. Worship of Allah alone is the deepest of them. A clear red line is not stubbornness. It is what makes all other negotiation honest.
The practical lesson is to know your lines before the offer comes. When it comes dressed as a small gesture, you will recognise it.
