Ghafir 40:44

“And you will remember what I [now] say to you, and I entrust my affair to Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Seeing of [His] servants."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Having said everything he could, threatened with death, he handed his whole case to Allah and stepped back, knowing he was seen.

A reflection

Not giving up

Many of us hear trust in Allah as a kind of surrender in the weak sense. A shrug. I have done nothing, so I will leave it to God. It can sound like giving up.

Look at when the believer says wa-ufawwiḍu amrī ilā Allāh, I hand over my affair to Allah. Not at the start. At the end, after a long speech of argument, warning, reasoning and pleading that began at 40:28. He has done everything a person could do. Only then does he hand it over.

One commentary notes why he says it here: they had threatened him for opposing their religion. Another reads the whole sentence as the words of a man under threat. It is as if they frightened him with death, it says, and he frightened them with you will remember. Then he leaned, against their plotting, on Allah's grace alone.

That same commentary adds that he learned this from Musa. When Pharaoh threatened Musa, Musa had said: I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one (40:27). The believer heard it and made it his own.

A student revises for months for an exam she badly needs to pass. On the morning, she prays, sets down her pen at the end, and walks out into the sunshine. She has done her part.

That is what tafwīḍ looks like. It is not instead of effort. It is what comes after effort, when you have reached the edge of your own power. The believer did not hand over his affair because he was lazy. He handed it over because he had nothing left to give, and he knew exactly who to give it to.
