Ghafir 40:53

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْهُدَىٰ وَأَوْرَثْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

“And We had certainly given Moses guidance, and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit the Scripture”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah gave Musa the guidance and made the Children of Israel heirs of the Book, a gift that outlived Pharaoh and every throne.

A reflection

Not a guidance, the guidance

Wa-laqad ātaynā mūsā al-hudā. And We certainly gave Musa the guidance.

The ayah does not say a guide, or a book of guidance. It says al-hudā: the guidance itself. One later commentary notes two ways to read this. Either the word stands for everything by which one is guided. Or Musa was given guidance so fully that it is called guidance itself, for emphasis.

What did that guidance contain? A classical rhetorical commentary answers broadly: everything given to him in the matter of religion. The miracles, the Torah, the laws. A concise commentary lists the Torah and the miracles. A modern one adds: the knowledge by which the Children of Israel would be guided to the truth.

The root h-d-y, as the commentaries explain it, means being led, not only shown. Guidance points out the road, turns the heart to walk it, keeps you firm and brings you to the end. That description reflects a spiritual reading in the commentaries, not a single concrete image from the lexicons.

Now place this ayah in its setting. The surah has just told how Musa stood before Pharaoh, with a believer in Pharaoh's own court defending him. Pharaoh had a throne, an army and a tower he planned to climb to look for Musa's God (40:36-37). Musa had al-hudā.

A learner driver approaches her first busy roundabout. Her instructor does not just point at the road sign. He talks her through each moment, and keeps his own feet near the dual pedals. She is shown, and led, and kept safe, all at once.

The ayah gives the outcome of the contest in a single line. Pharaoh's kingdom is gone. The guidance Musa was given is still being read. What Allah gives as guidance outlasts what people build as power. That is worth remembering whenever the powerful seem to hold every card.
