Ghafir 40:55

“So be patient, [O Muḥammad]. Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin[1375] and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.”

Essence

Under pressure, the Prophet is given four things: patience, certainty in Allah's promise, seeking forgiveness, and glorifying his Lord at both ends of the day.

A reflection

Glory that shrinks the self

Wa-sabbiḥ bi-ḥamdi rabbik. And glorify, with the praise of your Lord.

Tasbīḥ means declaring Allah far above every flaw, partner and weakness. The lexicons add a striking note about its letters. The same root carries swimming, gliding, stars moving in their orbits. Some see in this a picture of the soul moving freely in His praise; that link is a reflective reading rather than a lexical rule. But the core sense is clear: to say He is beyond.

And it comes paired with ḥamd, praise. Two movements at once. Clearing Him of what does not befit Him, and affirming all that does.

This is the ayah's cure for the ego. Under pressure, a person's attention narrows to themselves: my reputation, my enemies, my plans. Tasbīḥ turns the gaze outward and upward. It reminds the self how small its own glory is.

A man reaches for his phone each morning, before he is fully awake, to see who has praised him overnight. Likes, comments, messages. For a month he tries something else. Before touching the phone, he says: glory be to Allah, and praise be to Him. He notices that the phone has less power over his mood by the end of the month.

A doubt follows naturally. Does Allah need to be glorified morning and evening? Is this a God hungry for praise?

A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari says: no one loves praise more than Allah, and for that He promised Paradise. Notice where the hadith goes. His love of praise does not end in His benefit. It ends in a promise of Paradise for the one who praises.

He is free of all need (35:15). Our praise adds nothing to Him. But praising Him rightly sizes us. It frees us from the exhausting work of seeking glory for ourselves.
