Fussilat 41:10
“And He placed on it [i.e., the earth] firmly set mountains over its surface, and He blessed it and determined therein its [creatures'] sustenance in four days without distinction[1384] - for [the information of] those who ask.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Mountains set on the earth like anchors, blessing settled into its soil, and every mouth's food measured out before the first mouth existed.
A reflection
Food measured before the first mouth
"And He measured out in it its provisions." One early scholar, quoted in a classical commentary, put the ayah in a single line. He measured the provisions of bodies before He created the bodies.
The word for provisions is aqwāt, plural of qūt. The lexicons say the root means holding a thing fast. Qūt is the food that holds in the last of life: enough, and no more. Before there was a single creature to be hungry, the earth already held, measured and stored, what would keep each one alive.
The ego tells a different story. I earned my bread. I built my career. I fed my family. There is truth in effort, and the Qur'an honours it. But underneath every salary is a field, and underneath every field is a measuring that happened before anyone was born. You found the provision. You did not put it there.
Picture a patient wheeled into theatre for a long operation. While he is still under anaesthetic, a porter brings a covered tray up to the ward and leaves it by his empty bed. It has his name on a card. Soup, bread, a pot of jelly. He will wake hours later, hungry, and it will be there. He will not have asked for it.
That is the order of this ayah. The provisions were measured into the earth before the creature arrived to need them. A sceptic might hear in this a ruler reminding subjects who feeds them, so that they stay grateful. But the reminder is not for the ruler's benefit. It is for the patient who wakes up and thinks he is alone. The tray says: someone knew you were coming.
So when anxiety about money tightens, remember the tray. Your work is real, and you must do it. But your provision was not invented by your work. It was measured out for you before your first breath, by the One who holds every qūt fast. Pride in your earnings shrinks before that. And so, oddly, does fear.
