Fussilat 41:16

“So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Those who asked "who is stronger than us?" were undone by moving air, and tasted a disgrace that was only the first course.

A reflection

Undone by air

ʿĀd had asked, "Who is stronger than us?" (41:15). The answer came as wind. Not an army, not an earthquake, not fire from the sky. Moving air: the softest, most invisible thing in their world.

One commentary sees the fit precisely. The wind was strong, extremely cold and loud with a terrifying noise. It was so, he says, that their punishment would be of the same kind as the thing that deceived them: their strength. They trusted in force, and they were met by a force they could not see, grip or fight.

Elsewhere the Qur'an completes the picture. It blew on them for seven nights and eight days without break. You would see the people lying in it like the hollow trunks of palm trees (69:7). Do you see any remnant of them (69:8)?

The ego always assumes its strength is the decisive fact in the room. Picture the tallest tower crane on a city skyline, lifting steel beams thirty storeys up. It is the heaviest, most powerful machine for miles. But every crane operator knows the rule. When the wind passes a certain speed, the job stops. The jib is turned free to swing with the gusts, and the operator climbs down. The giant of the skyline yields to the air.

A sceptic might call the destruction of ʿĀd a display of raw power rather than justice. But the account is not of power for its own sake. It follows messengers sent from every side (41:14), arrogance "without right" (41:15), and signs knowingly denied. The wind came last, after everything else had been refused.

So the next time the wind rises hard against your window, let it be a small sermon. The strongest people of their age could not stand against it. You are not stronger than them. The One who sends the wind is stronger than everything, and the only safe place to stand is with Him, not against Him.
