Fussilat 41:14
“[That occurred] when the messengers had come to them before them and after them, [saying], "Worship not except Allāh." They said, "If our Lord had willed,[1388] He would have sent down the angels, so indeed we, in that with which you have been sent, are disbelievers."”

Essence
Messengers came at them from every side with one sentence, worship none but Allah, and they hid behind their Lord's name to refuse it.
A reflection
From every side, group after group
The messengers came to them "from in front of them and from behind them". Two classical commentators read the phrase as a picture of total effort. The messengers came at them from every side, they say. They worked on them with every approach and every means, and saw nothing in return but defiance and turning away. Another adds that the two directions stand for all directions: the messengers gave everything they had.
Two concise commentaries add a different detail. The messengers followed one after another, they say, with one single call. The lexicons give the root of rusul a fitting picture. Herds were sent down to water arsālan, group after group, so that each could drink. One messenger after another, each bringing the same water.
Picture a school attendance officer assigned to a family whose eleven-year-old has stopped coming. She writes. She texts. She knocks and leaves a note through the door. She rings the grandmother, who sometimes does the school run. She tries the mosque, where the father prays on Fridays. Every route, every voice. Not to punish, but because a child is missing out on his future.
That is the shape of what ʿĀd and Thamūd received. Not one warning, but a campaign of care. That is also what makes their refusal so complete. It was not that the message never reached them. It reached them from every side, and they turned from every side.
There is a strategy in this for anyone trying to reach someone they love. One approach rarely works. People hear different voices, at different times, from different directions. The parent, the friend, the stranger's kind word, the book left on a table. Keep sending, group after group, until each part of them has been offered water.
And there is a warning for the one being reached. Perhaps truth keeps arriving in your life from every direction: a friend, a sermon, your own conscience at night. Then you are being approached on every side. That is a mercy. It will not last forever.
