Fussilat 41:18

وَنَجَّيْنَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ يَتَّقُونَ

“And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allāh.”

Saheeh International

Essence

In the middle of the ruin, a quiet line: those who believed, and had long been guarding themselves, were lifted clear.

A reflection

High ground

Najjaynā: We rescued. The root has a picture the first hearers would have known from every wadi. A najwa is ground high enough that a flood never reaches it. One lexicon says it earned its name by escaping the water.

So rescue, in this word, is not being snatched from the water at the last moment. It is being on ground the water cannot climb. One commentary says no harm touched them and nothing of the destruction reached them. Another says Allah set them apart from the deniers, so that what fell on the others did not fall on them.

Picture a market town on a river after three days of rain. The lower streets are under water by dawn, cars floating, shops ruined. Halfway up the hill, an old row of cottages sits dry. Nobody in them did anything heroic that morning. Their grandparents simply built above the line the river reaches. The rescue was decided long before the rain.

That is the hope of this ayah. The believers were not saved by a lucky escape. They were already standing on high ground.
