Fussilat 41:19
وَيَوْمَ يُحْشَرُ أَعْدَآءُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ فَهُمْ يُوزَعُونَ
“And [mention, O Muḥammad], the Day when the enemies of Allāh will be gathered to the Fire while they are [driven], assembled in rows,”
Saheeh International
Essence
Those who pushed ahead of everyone in life are held in ranks on the last Day, the front kept waiting for the rear.
A reflection
Held back in the ranks
Fa-hum yūzaʿūn. The lexicons give the word a picture from war. The wāziʿ was the officer over the battle lines. He checked anyone who stepped forward unbidden, holding the front back so the rear could catch up. The sheepdog that kept the wolf off the flock was also called a wāziʿ.
Two early commentators read the ayah with exactly that picture. The first of them are held back for the last of them, they say, until they are gathered together. One adds that there are officers over them, turning the front back onto the rear. Another commentary records a further detail from an early scholar: when the number is complete, they begin with the worst in crime, then the next.
Think about what that means for the people described. In life, many of them had pushed ahead. They took the front seat, the first word, the larger share. They stepped forward unbidden whenever there was something to be had. On that Day, the order is reversed. They are made to stand and wait in line, held back by others, moving only when they are moved.
Picture the start of a city marathon. Hundreds of runners crowd towards the line, the eager ones elbowing to the front. Stewards hold a rope across the road. Nobody goes until the whole field has gathered behind it. The fastest stand shoulder to shoulder with the slowest, waiting. For a few minutes, no one is ahead of anyone.
That moment of waiting is a small mercy at a marathon. In the ayah it is the opposite of a mercy: a crowd driven together towards a place no one wants to reach.
The word asks a question of the living. Where are you pushing to the front now, unbidden? Where are you stepping ahead of others for a share that is not yours? The time to hold yourself back, gently and by choice, is before someone else is appointed to do it.
