Fussilat 41:38

“But if they are arrogant - then those who are near your Lord [i.e., the angels] exalt Him by night and by day, and they do not become weary.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Refuse to bow, and no gap opens in heaven: those near your Lord glorify Him through every night and day without once growing weary.

A reflection

The refusal that leaves no gap

The ayah is built like a sentence with a missing half. If they are too proud... and then, instead of a threat, a view of heaven. Those with your Lord glorify Him night and day. One classical commentator supplies what is left unsaid. Pay them no attention, he says, or: their refusal takes nothing from your Lord's greatness. Another puts it more starkly. Allah never lacks a worshipper or a sincere prostrator.

That is a hard thing for the ego to hear. Pride quietly assumes that its worship is a gift. If I stop praying, something is lost up there. If I withhold my bow, Someone is diminished. The ayah answers with a single sweep of the curtain. Behind it, beings of honour have been glorifying Him without pause since before you were born.

Picture a man who stops going to the dawn prayer in protest. The mosque committee overruled him about the new heating, and he wants them to feel his absence. On the first morning he lies awake at the hour, imagining the gap in the second row. At the mosque, nobody mentions it. The rows close up and the imam recites as he always does. The only place the absence is felt is in the man himself, who has lost his own morning.

The ayah does not say this to belittle anyone. It says it to free them from a strange arrogance: the belief that Allah's glory depends on our attendance. It does not. The Quran says it elsewhere: whoever strives, strives only for himself, and Allah is free of need of all the worlds (29:6).

So the humble reading of the ayah is also the hopeful one. Your prostration adds nothing to Him. That is precisely why He can offer it to you as pure gift.
