Fussilat 41:51

“And when We bestow favor upon man, he turns away and distances himself; but when evil touches him, then he is full of extensive supplication.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Blessed, a person turns a shoulder and drifts away; touched by harm, the same person suddenly has prayers wide enough to fill the sky.

A reflection

A turned shoulder

"When We bless a person, he turns away and takes himself off to one side." The two verbs are a piece of body language. The lexicons trace the first, aʿraḍa, to breadth: to turn away is to show someone only your side. The second phrase, naʾā bi-jānibihi, uses janb, the flank of the body. He moves his side away. These are established senses.

So the ayah draws a figure turning a shoulder. Not shouting, not rebelling openly. Just angling the body away from the Giver as the gift arrives.

A narration-based commentary explains what he turns from. He turns away from obedience, and holds himself too high to follow Allah's commands. It compares another ayah, where Pharaoh turned away "with his support" (51:39). A classical commentator says he turned from two things together: reverence for Allah's command and compassion for Allah's creation. And he went off with himself, in pride and self-importance.

Picture a woman going through a painful divorce. Every Sunday for a year, she sits at her aunt's kitchen table. The aunt makes tea, listens and prays with her. Three years later the woman has remarried. She is comfortable, busy and happy. Her aunt receives a card at Eid, signed in a hurry. The Sunday visits have simply stopped. There was no quarrel. Only a shoulder, slowly turned.

The ayah does not describe a monster. It describes a drift that happens to good people. Blessing tends to pull us away from the One who gave it, unless we deliberately turn back.

So the mirror question is about posture. In this season of your life, where things may be going well, which way is your face pointing? Towards the Giver, or slightly away, with the shoulder showing?
