Ash-Shuraa 42:19
ٱللَّهُ لَطِيفٌۢ بِعِبَادِهِۦ يَرْزُقُ مَن يَشَآءُ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْقَوِىُّ ٱلْعَزِيزُ
“Allāh is Subtle[1419] with His servants; He gives provision to whom He wills. And He is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah's care reaches every servant in ways too fine to notice, and the One so gentle is also the Strong, the Mighty.
A reflection
Cleaning a painting with a cotton bud
Allāhu laṭīfun bi-ʿibādih: Allah is subtle and gentle with His servants. The early commentators each caught a different side of the word. One said: attentive to them. Another: kind to them. Another: gentle with them.
One commentary quotes al-Ghazali's definition. The name truly belongs only to one who knows the finest details of what is good for someone, the hidden and delicate ones. And who then delivers them by the path of gentleness, not force. When fine perception and gentle action meet, the meaning of Laṭīf is complete, and that completeness is found only in Allah.
The root holds both halves. The lexicons give smallness and fineness: fine hair, a movement too light to register. And they give gentleness: pressing something close to your side rather than holding it away, as a mother is laṭīfa with her child.
Picture a picture restorer working on a three-hundred-year-old painting darkened by soot and varnish. She does not scrub. She works with a cotton bud and a solvent, a few millimetres at a time. She watches for the moment the grime lifts, before the paint is touched. Days later a child's face appears out of the darkness, exactly as the painter left it.
That is a small human picture of luṭf. Perfect knowledge of what lies beneath, and touch so gentle it harms nothing.
The ego is usually the opposite. We know a little, and act heavily. We are right about someone's fault and correct it with a scrubbing brush. We push, insist and force, then wonder why things break.
One commentator explains that His kindness reaches every one of His servants, and reaches into each one where they themselves cannot reach. Think of the times something in your life changed so quietly you only noticed afterwards. A worry dissolved. A door opened. Someone appeared at the right moment. That was not chance. It was the Subtle at work.
